A group of Year 9 and 10 students recently stepped out of the classroom and onto the tools as they took part in a Bricklaying and Carpentry Try‑a‑Trade experience. The program offered students the opportunity to explore two in‑demand trades.
Throughout the day, students worked alongside industry‑experienced trainer Rowan Murray to complete two projects:
Constructing brick archways, helped them understand the precision and technique required to create strong, curved structures.
Building timber frames, provided insight into the fundamentals of carpentry, measurement and structural design.
As part of the carpentry component, students had the opportunity to work with equipment such as drills and saws, developing confidence in tool handling, safety practices and accurate measurement.
The event gave students a taste of real trade work and helped them understand the problem‑solving and attention to detail that these industries demand.
With VET applications for Year 11 and 12 opening in early Term 3, experiences like this help students make decisions about their subject selections and potential career pathways, especially those considering a trade or Vocational Education and Training qualification.
We would like to thank Skill Hire Bunbury for accommodating us and providing such a wonderful opportunity for our students.
