Year 10 students at Our Lady of Mercy College have the opportunity to step beyond the classroom and experience the world of work during Work Experience Week. This five-day placement allows students to explore possible career pathways and develop important workplace skills.

Work Experience Week will take place Monday 29 June to Friday 3 July (Term 2, Week 11) and is open to Year 10 students who are not enrolled in the Workplace Learning Elective during Semester 1 or Semester 2. While participation is optional, students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to explore their interests, build confidence and experience a real workplace environment.

Why Work Experience Matters

Spending time in a workplace can be an eye-opening experience for students. It allows them to:

  • explore industries they may be interested in pursuing in the future

  • develop confidence and communication skills

  • understand workplace expectations and responsibilities

  • gain practical experience that can support future job or training applications

Students will also complete a Work Experience logbook, recording their hours, daily tasks and feedback from their workplace supervisor. This record can be useful when applying for part time jobs or external VET courses in the future.

Finding a Work Placement

Students, with the support of their families, are responsible for organising their own placement with a local business or organisation. Contacting businesses directly is a great way for students to make a positive first impression and practise professional communication.

Students will be supported through their Careers classes and will have access to resources such as:

  • a Work Experience Action Plan

  • phone scripts and email templates

  • a list of businesses that have previously hosted Mercy students

Students are encouraged to think about their interests and hobbies, research local businesses and begin contacting employers as soon as possible.

Important Step: Submitting the Placement

Once a placement has been confirmed with an employer, families must submit the placement details to the College’s Career Services Team so the necessary documentation and insurance arrangements can be organised.

Placement requests should be submitted as early as possible, with the final deadline being Friday 29 May (end of Term 2, Week 6).

Requests can be sent via email to olmca.careers@cewa.edu.au or through a SEQTA message to Ms Toni Moore.
