It has been a fantastic start to the 2026 sporting year at Our Lady of Mercy College.
Cricket Success
Cricket has been a major highlight in our community over summer.
Western Australian Country Colts Team
Congratulations to Sheldon, Montana and Rowan (Year 12) on their selection in the Western Australian Country Colts Cricket Team. Sheldon and Rowan were also part of the successful Belt Up Cup campaign in Geraldton, where the young team defeated senior association teams from across the state.
Western Australian Senior Country Team
Sheldon was also selected to represent WA at the National Country Cricket Championships held in Busselton over the school holidays, a significant achievement at senior level.
National Championships Selection
Jay (Year 10) has been selected in the final team of 13 to represent WA at the National Championships in Bunbury from 22 to 27 February. We wish him every success in this prestigious competition.
Our College Cricket team will be competing in the following upcoming cricket events:
Kim Hughes Shield – 4 and 18 March at Leschenault Recreation Ground
Bunbury Big Bash – 18 to 20 March at Leschenault Recreation Ground and Brunswick
LEAP Program in Full Swing
Our Leadership and Performance (LEAP) Program is already well underway for 2026. LEAP is an academic and sport-based initiative designed for students with a strong interest in health, sport and performance. The program provides a clear pathway into sport science, health and fitness while developing both physical capability and leadership capacity.
All Year 8, 9 and 10 students have completed their Pre-Test Fitness assessments, including beep test, flexibility, strength and coordination testing. These results provide baseline data and help students identify clear areas for improvement.
Year 8 LEAP students have completed testing and set SMART goals aligned to their chosen sports and Athletics. In theory sessions, they are learning how to structure comprehensive warm ups and understand different methods of training. They will work with Jackson Athletic Performance on sprint technique, starts, cutting and change of direction, before beginning a Biomechanics and Coaching block in partnership with Cricket Australia.
Year 9 students have commenced their three-week Strength and Conditioning block at ARK Strength and Fitness. Their initial session focused on partner conditioning work, correct technique, teamwork and accountability.
Year 10 students have begun a four-week Strength block refining foundational lifts including back squats and deadlifts, while building their knowledge of strength training principles.
Although the program formally begins in Year 8, our Year 7 students were given a preview during their recent Introduction Days. They participated in a LEAP taster session and practised the beep test, gaining an early insight into the expectations and opportunities the program provides.
The LEAP Program continues to provide a strong foundation for both performance and leadership development.
Alumni Recognition
We congratulate two Mercy alumni who have been named finalists in the 2025 WA Sport Awards:
Kyle Lee – Swimming WA
Lekeisha Pergoliti – Boxing
The WA Sport Awards recognise excellence across Western Australian sport and it is wonderful to see former Mercy students acknowledged at this level. Congratulations Lekeisha and Kyle!
Earlier this term, Mercy Alumni Tasha Gunson and her sister Chloe Gunson were named Young Community Citizens of the Year in recognition of their outstanding service to the local community.

Both Tasha and Chloe are dedicated leaders within the Eaton Basketball Association, contributing through coaching, refereeing and youth development. Through mentoring young players and supporting representative teams, they continue to strengthen local sport and foster meaningful community engagement.
We are especially proud to celebrate that both are Mercy Alumni and that Chloe is currently part of our College community, working in the Career Services department.
At the end of January, Chloe had the privilege of being the Girls’ Team Manager for one of the inaugural Eaton Basketball Association travelling teams competing at the renowned Eltham Dandenong Junior Basketball Tournament. This tournament is one of the world’s longest running and largest basketball events, featuring 1,957 teams, including 53 from Western Australia, across an intense four‑day schedule. The Eaton Under 16 Girls and Under 18 Boys teams both went undefeated throughout the tournament and capped off their campaigns with impressive grand final victories.
Congratulations Tasha and Chloe on this well-deserved recognition.
National Success in Underwater Hockey
Four of our students were selected to represent Western Australia at the Australian Underwater Hockey National Championships, held on the Gold Coast, Queensland, in January.
Madison (Year 9), Lachlan (Year 9) and Lynlee (Year 8 ) competed in the Mixed Open Under 15 team, with Team WA proudly bringing home the silver medal. Matilda (Year 10) was a member of the Under 19 Women’s team, who also delivered an outstanding performance to secure silver.
To be selected to represent your state is an exceptional accomplishment and to return home with silver makes it even more impressive. Congratulations Madison, Lachlan, Lynlee and Matilda.
