It has been a rewarding and action-packed term of sport at Our Lady of Mercy College.

Cricket Success

The Kim Hughes Shield Cricket competition was held over three weeks beginning in Week 5. Our First team started strongly with a great win against Bunbury Catholic College, posting 9 for 181 from their 40 overs before bowling Bunbury out for 121 in 27 overs. The team then faced Bunbury Cathedral Grammar in a closely contested match and showed great determination to secure another well-earned win. We then played Bunbury SHS and had a convincing win.

As the team has won the South West competition they travelled to Perth to compete in the semi-final. They didn't come away with a first place but we do congratulations all players on their overall seasons efforts. Thank you to Mr Shane Jamieson and Mr Charles Kunje for their time and leadership.

Bunbury Big Bash T20 Competition

In 2026 as a part of expanding our Cricket Program, the College assisted, coordinate and participated in this competition competing against metropolitan schools such as Kent Street SHS, Kennedy Baptist College, Tranby College and John Forrest SHS. This increases the exposure and experience of our young players.

Coach Charles Kunje was impressed by the positive attitude of our students, sportsmanship skills demonstrated against some of the best Year 10 students in the state.

Some notable performances included our three youngest players in Sam, Jaxon and Fletcher. Our older players demonstrated some good leadership and performances to round out a good tournament. Jay, William and Himaksh were among our most consistent performers.

Fuel to Go Tennis Carnival

We also had students compete in the Fuel to Go Tennis Carnival, where we sent five teams, three junior teams and two senior teams. The Junior Boys had an excellent tournament and remained undefeated until the cross-over final, where they were unfortunately eliminated. Our Senior Girls also performed strongly and finished second overall.

Swimming Carnival

Earlier this term we competed in the Interschool Swimming Carnival, where the College finished 3rd overall, which was a fantastic result.

Several students were also recognised for their outstanding individual performances. Congratulations to the following:

• Brayden – Year 8 Runner-Up Champion Boy

• Lynlee – Year 8 Champion Girl

• Isabella – Year 8 Runner-Up Champion Girl

• Lachlan – Year 9 Runner-Up Champion Boy

• Matilda – Year 9 Champion Girl

• Matilda also set a new record in the Yr 9 Girls 50m Butterfly event. Well done Matilda.

• Jay – Year 10 Champion Boy

ACC Basketball South West Carnival

At the ACC Basketball South West Carnival, all four of our teams progressed through to their respective grand finals, an outstanding achievement and a reflection of the depth of talent across the program. Three teams were crowned champions, while our Junior Girls delivered a strong performance to finish as runners-up. The Junior Boys will also have the opportunity to build on this success when they host a visiting team at the College next term.

In other ACC fixtures, our Senior Girls competed in an elimination final against Kennedy but were unfortunately knocked out after a hard-fought contest. The Senior Boys, however, continued their impressive run, securing a win over Mandurah Catholic College in their elimination final before facing Mundaring in the semi-final. Trailing by seven points at the three-quarter mark, the team showed great composure and determination to come from behind and claim a six-point victory.

They advanced to the grand final against Living Waters Lutheran College, where they narrowly missed the win. Despite the result, it was a commendable performance, particularly given the absence of several key players, and a strong finish to their ACC campaign.

In the Wider Sporting Arena

Congratulations to Imogen (Year 10), who made her debut this term with the South West Jets Futures in the State Netball League. The South West Jets Futures were successful in taking home the title this weekend after a top of the table clash.

She has also been selected as part of Netball WA’s Fever in Time, a fantastic recognition of her talent and potential.

Imogen’s achievements are a reflection of her commitment and perseverance. She is also an active member of the College’s Leadership and Performance (LEAP) Program, where she continues to demonstrate dedication both on and off the court.

Congratulations to Sean (Year 9), who, alongside his bridge partner Dean from Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School, has been selected to represent Western Australia in the WA Youth Bridge Team for 2026. The team will compete in Canberra during the June school holidays, an outstanding achievement.

Lani (Year 12) recently competed at the National Karate Championships, earning two silver medals and showcasing her dedication and skill on the national stage. She competed alongside Class of 2023 student Sophia Tomas, who also came away with gold and silver medals in her respective divisions.

Meanwhile, Alby (Year 10) has been making waves in dragon boating, competing at the WA State Championships with his Bunbury-based team, Forza. As the youngest member of the team, Alby’s commitment to training and competition has been exceptional, and his efforts were rewarded with an impressive haul of three gold medals and one bronze.

We also congratulate Harper and Marlee ( both Year 10), who have been selected to represent at the U15 Female Cricket Talent Games this April, with matches taking place at Guildford Grammar, another fantastic opportunity to compete at a high level.

Athletics Carnival

A fantastic day of competition and community at our Athletics Carnival. Well done to all students for their efforts and congratulations to Costello House on winning the trophy. Thank you to the Student Media Team.
