Mercy Schools Connect at Conference

Updated: Jun 19

The Australasian Mercy Secondary Schools Association (AMSSA) Conference is a special event that happens every two years, bringing together educators and leaders from Mercy schools across Australia and New Zealand. This year, on 28 and 29 May, three members of our College—Acting Principal Maree Maughan, Director of Teaching Natasha Hart and Head of Year 11 Teagan Doyle—had the privilege of attending the conference at Santa Maria College in Perth. The theme was Community, Connection and Celebration.

The conference was packed with inspiring keynote presentations, professional learning sessions and opportunities for spiritual reflection. Professor Br David Hall FMS captivated everyone with his wisdom on Catholic leadership and formation while Dr Helen Street shared valuable strategies to foster motivation and wellbeing in school communities. The workshops explored contemporary educational issues like inclusive practice, student mental health and sustaining Mercy values through change. Discussions highlighted growing concerns about the influence of smartphones and digital technology on young people's focus, relationships and sense of happiness.

A highlight of the conference was the Mercy Pilgrimage which provided a special opportunity to reflect on the legacy of the Sisters of Mercy. Delegates connected with the rich heritage of the Sisters of Mercy and the foundations of Mercy Education. Overall, the experience reinforced our College's commitment to Mercy education and the appreciation for the values that guide our school.
