In Catherine’s Boots: A Mercy Pilgrimage to Ireland

Earlier this year, I was fortunate to join Mercy educators from the USA, the Philippines, Jamaica, Argentina and Australia on a pilgrimage to Dublin, Ireland, to deepen my understanding of the life and legacy of Catherine McAuley. This unique experience brought together educators from across the global Mercy community to reflect on our shared heritage and gain a richer appreciation of the vision that continues to inspire our schools today.
Over several days, we immersed ourselves in the story of Catherine McAuley through prayer, reflection and visits to places that were central to her life and ministry. A particular highlight was spending time at the Mercy International Centre on Bagot Street, the original House of Mercy founded by Catherine in 1827. Walking through the rooms where Catherine lived and worked brought history to life and offered a powerful insight into her unwavering commitment to serving those most in need.
Other memorable experiences included praying at Catherine’s grave, exploring the beauty and tranquillity of Glendalough, visiting Coolock House where Catherine once lived and spending time with the Sisters of Mercy who continue her mission today. We also had the opportunity to walk through the streets of Dublin, following in the footsteps of Catherine and the first Sisters of Mercy, visiting many of the places where they prayed, learned and ministered to the poor, sick and vulnerable.
Beyond the historical significance of the sites we visited, the pilgrimage provided valuable time for personal reflection and meaningful conversations with fellow Mercy educators from around the world. Sharing stories, experiences and perspectives reinforced the global nature of the Mercy mission and the many ways Catherine’s vision continues to be lived out across diverse communities.
The pilgrimage concluded with a commissioning prayer service, inviting us to carry forward Catherine’s mission of compassion and service in our own schools and communities. It was a deeply enriching experience and one that will remain with me for a very long time.
Thank you to Mercy Education for organising and sponsoring this wonderful opportunity.
