Our Lady of Mercy College students recently had the opportunity to take part in a tour of the South32 Worsley Alumina Refinery in Collie. The visit offered valuable insights into one of Western Australia’s major industries and gave students a firsthand look at the processes involved in alumina production.

The general manager and superintendents generously took time out of their busy schedules to present and escort the students through the site, explaining how bauxite is mined in the South West and Peel regions before being transported via an overland conveyor belt to the refinery. There, the bauxite is refined into a fine white alumina powder, which is then exported to smelters across the globe.

Students also had the chance to hear from Rahbia from the Specialist Apprentices Trainees Governance, who shared valuable information about apprenticeship opportunities with South32, including what is on offer and how to stand out when applying.

The excursion provided an engaging and educational experience, giving students a deeper understanding of local industry operations and potential career pathways within the resources sector.

A huge thank you to Miss Chloe Gunson from our Career Services department, Jessica Ashcroft from the Jobs and Skills Centre Collie Campus, and all the staff from South32 for this incredible opportunity for our students.
