Our Library Chess Club recently represented Our Lady of Mercy College at a Chess Tournament hosted by Manea Senior College, delivering an outstanding performance against strong competition from across the region.
The team started the day with a few understandable nerves in the opening round. Deagan, Dean N, James and Dean S soon found their rhythm, recovering strongly after some cautious early moves. Dean N secured the team's first checkmate of the day, while Deagan settled into his game confidently and claimed a convincing victory. James played impressively to earn a strong win and Dean S overcame a shaky start to finish with a dominant performance.
Round two saw the team continue their momentum. Deagan faced a talented opponent from Newton Moore and demonstrated excellent strategic thinking, patiently setting a trap that ultimately led to checkmate. James once again played confidently to secure another win. Although Liam experienced a tough loss after a closely contested match, Dean S continued his strong form with another impressive victory.
By round three, Mercy had lost just one game from eight and the team was playing with growing confidence. Deagan, Dean N and Liam all recorded excellent wins, showcasing strong openings and clever tactics. Deagan played a patient, calculated game, while Dean N applied constant pressure with a well-developed position that left his opponent with few options. Dean S maintained his unbeaten run with another convincing victory, bringing Mercy's tally to an impressive 11 wins from 12 games.
Round four provided a welcome opportunity to recharge, with Mercy receiving a bye. The team enjoyed a well-earned break and some delicious refreshments provided by the Manea Senior College cafeteria.
Heading into the final round, the competition for first place remained extremely close, with Mercy narrowly ahead of the host school. The atmosphere was intense as players from both teams battled through tightly contested matches. In several games, victory came down to composure, concentration and the ability to capitalise on small opportunities.
The Mercy players rose to the challenge, demonstrating skill under pressure to secure an outstanding result. Finishing the tournament with 14 wins from 16 games, the team achieved a remarkable record and claimed a well-deserved tournament victory.
A special thank you and congratulations goes to our Library Officer, Tracy MacLean, who has enthusiastically led and supported the Chess Club throughout the year. Her dedication has helped foster a love of chess among our students and played an important role in the team's success. Thank you also to Luke Wilson for his mentoring and encouragement throughout the event.
Congratulations to all our players on a fantastic achievement.
