Alumni Spotlight: Brock Potter – Class of 2020

Since graduating from the College in 2020, Brock has been focused on building a career in baking. It has involved hard work and learning along the way, with many valuable lessons from his time at Our Lady of Mercy College shaping the path he is on today.

What are you doing now? Tell us about your job or studies and your journey since graduating.

Since graduating, I’ve been on a bit of a journey, both personally and professionally. I’m currently working as a pastry chef on Rottnest Island and I really enjoy baking and decorating cakes and pastries every day. I took a few twists and turns to get here, including a three-year apprenticeship with Miami Bakehouse and studying at South Metropolitan Tafe in Bentley. Every step has taught me something new.

During my apprenticeship, I won a number of awards, including honours in the Perth Royal Food Awards and other baking industry competitions.

How did your time at Our Lady of Mercy College shape your career or studies? Were there any teachers, subjects or programs that inspired you?

OLMC played a big role in shaping my mindset. Subjects like Certificate II in Hospitality sparked my interest in cooking and baking, and I’ll always remember Mrs Ritchie, who encouraged me to keep going. The values and discipline I learnt there have definitely stayed with me in the real world.

What is a memorable moment from your time at Our Lady of Mercy College?

A few of my favourite memories from studying Certificate II in Hospitality include coming to school early to cook breakfast for staff, Pancake Day and helping to keep the teachers awake while doing a barista course before school started. Being able to cook and learn at the same time is one of the best experiences I’ve had.

What lessons or values from your time at the College do you still carry with you?

The emphasis on compassion and integrity really stayed with me. Whether at work or in my personal life, I try to treat people with respect and kindness, just as we were taught. I still believe in doing your best, even when no one is watching.

If you could give advice to a student at Our Lady of Mercy College about preparing for life after high school, what would it be?

Don’t stress if you don’t have it all figured out straight away. I definitely didn’t. Life after high school can be unpredictable, but that’s not a bad thing. Be open to trying new paths, and don’t be afraid to fail. It’s all part of learning. Stay curious and trust yourself.

What has been the biggest challenge since leaving school and how have you handled it?

Since leaving school and going straight into an apprenticeship, completing it was a challenge, but I had a lot of support from my family through the ups and downs. The most challenging part was the baking competitions, as I pushed myself to improve each year, which was definitely tough.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

In five years, I hope to be more settled in my career, maybe working toward a leadership role at TAFE or starting something of my own. I’d also love to travel more and continue growing as a person. I’m excited to see where life takes me.

We wish Brock all the best for the future.
