A Celebration of Student Talent, Creativity and Artistic Growth

June has been a busy and rewarding month across the Arts at Our Lady of Mercy College, with students showcasing their creativity and passion across Dance, Music, Drama, Visual Arts and Media.

Dance Students Shine at Bunbury Eisteddfod and Semester Concert

On Friday 12 June, our Year 9–12 Dance classes and Year 7–11 Dance Competition Team represented the College at the Bunbury Eisteddfod. Competing alongside talented dancers from schools across the South West, our students performed with confidence and professionalism.

Congratulations to our Year 7–11 Dance Competition Team, who received a Highly Commended for their outstanding performance.

The celebrations continued on Wednesday 17 June, with our Year 9–12 Dance students presenting their End of Semester Dance Concert. Performing class dances and small group pieces in a professional venue, students demonstrated the technical skills and performance abilities they have developed throughout the semester.

Our Dance students continued to share their talents, with some of our students visiting the Eden Life Retirement Village on Monday 29 June for a special performance.

We are incredibly proud of all our dancers for their commitment and the high standard of work they presented. They represented the College beautifully and should be proud of their achievements both on and off the stage.

Music Students Experience the Magic Behind the Stage

Our Year 8 Music students travelled to Perth for a backstage tour of His Majesty's Theatre, Perth, Western Australia’s oldest operating theatre.

Students explored areas rarely seen by the public, including the orchestra pit, fly wall, cabaret theatre and Level 3, where they discovered how the theatre’s fly system operates behind the scenes. The experience provided students with a unique insight into the many people and processes involved in bringing performances to life.

A highlight of the day was attending a performance by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, where students enjoyed a selection of Joe Hisaishi’s celebrated film scores. Experiencing the power and emotion of live orchestral music was a wonderful opportunity for students to deepen their appreciation of the magic that happens both on and behind the stage.

Creativity Flourishes in Visual Arts and Media

In our Visual Arts classrooms, students are busy finalising a range of creative projects, including mixed media pieces, ceramics and paintings. Students have been developing their artistic skills while exploring ideas, techniques and personal expression through their work.

Our Year 11 and 12 Visual Arts students also recently travelled to Perth to visit the Art Gallery of Western Australia. The excursion provided students with the opportunity to experience a diverse range of artworks, gain inspiration from professional artists and further develop their understanding of contemporary and historical art practices. Visiting galleries and engaging with artworks in person is an important part of the creative process, supporting students as they refine their own artistic ideas and practices.

Meanwhile, our Media students have been putting their skills into practice during Country Week, with a group of students capturing photographs and creating digital content throughout the event. This hands-on experience provides students with the opportunity to develop their storytelling, photography and production skills in a real-world setting.

School of Rock Takes Shape

Rehearsals for our upcoming production School of Rock are well underway, with cast and ensemble members working hard multiple times each week to bring the show to life.

Songs are coming together beautifully, choreography is taking shape and students are refining their timing, characterisation and comedic moments.
