2021 South West Carnival B Division Champions!

During the recent College Assembly, Sports Captain Emily Coutts revealed the fantastic results of the 2021 Interschool Carnival.

Our Lady of Mercy College has been announced as the 2021 South West Carnival B Division Lower School Champion, Upper School Champion and Overall Champion!

Having earned their spot through some brilliant performances at our House Athletics Carnival last term, our Year 7-12 Athletics Team competed at the School Sport WA South West Athletics Carnival held at the start of May at Bunbury Regional Athletics Arena.

It was our first time competing in this carnival as Our Lady of Mercy College. This year's carnival was significantly larger than previous years, with a total of 17 schools from the South West participating.

Though it was forecasted to be a wet day, we had unexpectedly fine conditions, and the sun appeared for a brilliant day of Athletics.

Our athletes competed fiercely all day, and it was fantastic to see a selfless, team-first mentality on display. When the team required substitutes to fill events, there was no shortage of willing athletes who showed courage to step up and help out where required.

Every athlete who participated should be very proud of their efforts. Ultimately, you’ve been rewarded by being announced as the 2021 South West Carnival B Division Lower School Champions, Upper School Champions and Overall Champions beating Cape Naturaliste College by over 200 points! That’s a significant win and a fantastic achievement for our College!

We also had some brilliant individual performances at the carnival, with several students being named Age Champion or Runner Up Age Champion.

  • Year 7 Girls Runner Up Champion – Dakoda Zabajnik

  • Year 8 Girls Runner Up Champion – Charli Stewart

  • Year 8 Boys Champion – Harrison Silvester

  • Year 9 Girls Runner Up Champion – Elijah Hehir

  • Year 10 Boys Champion – Thomas Cross

  • Open Girls Runner Up Champion – Leah York

  • Open Boys Champion – James Kiely

Finally, we did have one Our Lady of Mercy College student break a record at the carnival. Thomas Cross broke the Year 10 Boys 1500m record – the old record was set in 1976 at 4:16.70. Thomas ran it in 4:15.57. Congratulations Thomas!

Thanks to the Year 12 Cert II Sport & Rec students who were student helpers at the carnival, and thank you to the PE staff for their work training the team and supporting on the day. Your time and expertise are really appreciated.

We look forward to seeing what our Athletics team can achieve in A Division next year!

Emily Coutts, Our Lady of Mercy College Sports Captain.
