Workplace Learning Spotlight: Eloise Hart at Summit Homes Southwest

Our Year 10 student, Eloise Hart, is participating in the College’s Workplace Learning Program at Summit Homes. Eloise showed her first floor plan drawing to the Year 10 Workplace Learning class and provided them with an insight into her work placement at Summit Homes Southwest.

“I went into Summit Homes, knowing as little as possible as to what an Architectural Draftsperson does. After walking inside with a bright smile and asking for my supervisor, I knew I would like it here. The team I worked with consisted of Nathen and Jenelle. Nate showed me how to use the software system ArchiCAD, an architectural designing software made to ensure the customer is happy with the floor plan.

When I arrived, my supervisor showed me the showroom. All I can say is ‘Wow’! I later was told that Nathen actually designed the showroom as well as the open floor work area in the back - both stunning!

Throughout my first few hours, I sat and watched both Jenelle and Nate, do pre-starts. This was an eye-opening experience. During my lunch break, I grabbed a notepad and a pen. The house ideas just started flowing from pen to paper, and by the end, I had a rough house design. Nate offered me a large piece of paper and a special drafting ruler. With some careful lines and strategically placed windows I had created my very first not to scale home floor plan. On my second day, I worked on the ArchiCad, it was very stressful. Half the time I was wondering what I was doing and whether I was doing it correctly. But in the end, I worked it out and made a granny flat! To everyone out there, try the program! It shows that you have to put something together for yourself, give it a go.”

We thank Summit Homes for hosting Eloise. For more information about the College’s Workplace Learning Program, please contact our Career Services team via email olmca.careers@cewa.edu.au
