The teachers at Our Lady of Mercy College continue to find creative ways to inspire and engage students in their learning. This term, during Religious Education (RE) classes, under guidance of Mrs Addy Godwin, Head of Learning Area – RE, students have been exploring the meaning and messages behind the Book of Psalms.
Because the Psalms were written thousands of years ago, their language can sometimes feel distant to modern readers. To bridge this gap, Mrs Godwin encouraged students to use AI technology in a fun and educational way to reimagine the Psalms in contemporary language, giving ancient words a modern-day voice.
The exercise helped students better understand the depth and timelessness of the Psalms’ messages. One of the most well-known passages, Psalm 23, became a favourite among students.
Psalm 23 is a poetic declaration of faith and peace, reminding us that if we have God in our lives we don’t need to be scared and we are forever safe in His care.
Psalm 23 (Modern Version by Chloe D., Year 7):
“God’s my guide, I’m chillin’ — no stress,
Got what I need, no need to obsess.
He parks me in peace, green grass, blue skies,
Streams so calm, I just close my eyes.
He lifts me up when I’m feelin’ low,
Shows me the path, tells me where to go.
Even when life’s dark and full of fear,
I walk through it — 'cause I know He’s near.
His vibe protects, His love’s my shield,
No fake friends, just truth revealed.
He sets the table, haters gotta watch,
My cup’s so full, it’s overflow — top notch.
Goodness and love, they follow my pace,
Every step, every move, every place.
I’m vibin’ with Him, forever I’ll stay,
In His house, His heart — all day, erry day.”
Psalm 23 (Original Version)
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Through this activity, students discovered that even the oldest scriptures can speak powerfully to today’s world, especially when explored with imagination.
