Exploring the World of Early Childhood Education

It’s been a hands-on term in the Early Childhood Education Learning Area, with students across Years 9 to 12 embracing a wide range of creative and insightful learning experiences.

Our senior students in Years 11 and 12 had the opportunity to connect via Teams with Dr Liana Luyt, a lecturer from the School of Education at Murdoch University. Dr Luyt, who specialises in Inclusive Support and Special Needs Education, spoke about the many pathways from Early Childhood Education into teaching, particularly in the area of Special Education. The students found the session inspiring and eye-opening.

Meanwhile, our Year 10 students have been putting their creativity and practical skills to the test. After completing their assignment on creating a literacy bag based on a children’s picture book, they moved on to developing their very own Nature Passports.

These passports aim to inspire young children to engage with the natural world in meaningful and playful ways—whether in their own backyard, at a park or out exploring bushland and beaches. These passports will be shared with the Harvey Shire, which currently doesn’t have a nature-based resource like this available for local families.

Year 9s have also had a memorable term, taking home virtual babies as part of their studies on pregnancy and early parenting. As part of the unit, they designed brochures for expectant mothers and heard from two real-life mums, Shelby and Kirsty, who visited the class to share their personal experiences of pregnancy and newborn care. Baby Halle snoozed peacefully during the session, while little Teliah delighted everyone by showing off her smiles and ability to roll over!

The term will end on a fun and festive note with an Easter colouring-in competition.
