Alumni Spotlight: Emma Drew – Class of 2018

Updated: May 7

Meet Emma Drew, a graduate of the Class of 2018, whose journey since leaving Our Lady of Mercy College has taken her from leadership roles in healthcare to the fast-paced world of fashion. As part of the College’s inaugural graduating group, Emma and her cohort played a key role in shaping the Mercy experience for future students.

What are you doing now? Tell us about your job or studies and your journey since graduating:

Well, I’m nearly 24 now! I am currently a production and management intern in Sydney with a high-end Australian fashion brand and am about to complete my second degree (first a Bachelor of Science with Distinction, and now a Bachelor of Business). I worked as a Clinical Manager within the Bethanie Group in Perth for three years and am now shifting into the brand management sector—blending my passion for leadership and fashion. I hope to enter brand management at the conclusion of my degree. I’ve also taken up the sport of triathlon and now compete under the UWA Triathlon Club, with upcoming competitions including the Busselton 100 and a Half Ironman at the end of the year!

How did your time at Our Lady of Mercy College shape your career or studies? Were there any teachers, subjects, or programs that inspired you?

I was Head Girl at Mercy, and I’ve found that the leadership skills I honed during that time have helped me succeed in my adult life. I’ve surpassed many of my own expectations and seen my career flourish in some really rewarding leadership roles.

What is a memorable moment from your time at Our Lady of Mercy College?

Being the first Head Girl was definitely the most memorable! But being part of the inaugural graduating group and having a big say in shaping what the school has become will always be so special to us. We loved having a small cohort—we were all so close, and many of us still are today!

What lessons or values from your time at the College do you still carry with you?

I regularly think about those who taught me the most valuable communication and writing skills. My Year 12 ATAR English teacher, Mrs Ball, taught me how to write an amazing essay, and I use those skills every day. I hope the teachers know how much they impact our adult working lives!

If you could give advice to a student at Our Lady of Mercy College about preparing for life after high school, what would it be?

There’s so much of the world to see—it’s incredible! Enjoy school, because you only get to experience it once. Don’t stress—everything works out in the end!

What has been the biggest challenge since leaving school, and how have you handled it?

Moving away from home and building a life for myself! It can be hard, but it’s amazing (and a bit insane) how much my life has changed in seven years. Everything has changed for the better, and I ALWAYS remind myself that the Year 12 version of me dreamed of what I’m accomplishing and achieving now. I’m living her dream life, and I’m so proud of that. Even on days when it feels like you're getting nowhere, and that you’re not moving fast enough, you have to celebrate the small wins!

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

I look forward to moving away from Perth—I’m eager to spend some time in Scandinavia (Copenhagen is my favourite city!). I’d love to be managing a fashion label or company—maybe even my own? And, I’d also love to complete a full Ironman!

We wish Emma all the best in her future endeavours.
