Year 7 Boys AFL Team wins ACC Cup - Term 2 Sport News

It has been a busy end to Term 2 with Our Lady of Mercy College participating in various sports carnivals across the state.

High Schools Netball Cup

It started with the High Schools Netball Cup. We had two junior teams, two middle teams and two senior teams. Our Senior Boys won the Championship Division, while our Middle Girls came runner-up in the Championship Division and won the Challenger Division. By finishing in the Top 2 of the Championship Division at the carnival, our Senior Boys and Middle Girls qualified for the Elimination Finals held in Perth.

A week later, the teams were off to Perth to compete in the Elimination Finals. It was an early start, with the school bus leaving the College at 6 am. Both teams competed well and gave the Perth schools no easy games. The Senior Boys Team performed exceptionally well, topping their pool and winning their first crossover final.

In the last final of the day, we were drawn against a strong Willetton team. The boys, expertly coached by Mrs Pere, matched Willetton in all areas of the court, and were in the lead with a couple of minutes to go. Unfortunately, the team ended up going down by 8-6, but they can still be incredibly proud of their efforts.

Thank you to Mrs Godwin and Ms Gustaffason, who helped coach the girls.

Year 7 ACC AFL Carnival

Next up, was the Year 7 Associated and Catholic Colleges of WA (ACC) AFL carnival. A boys and girls team both represented the College with distinction. The girls team put up a brave performance and kept trying all day despite the challenging conditions.

The boys team had a very successful day conceding only one goal for the day, which was in the last game. By winning, the boys qualified for the finals held in Perth.

Another early departure from Our Lady of Mercy did nothing to dampen the boys' spirits, who were excited from the time they left until the time they returned. The boys had a bye in the first round and then played four games in a row, winning all.

They were then crowned ACC Champions, received their medallions and celebrated on the long bus ride home. Senior student helper Nic Madaffari (who did a fantastic job) also had to fulfil his promise of buying the team frozen cokes if they won.

Our Year 7 boys are the first team in the College’s history to be crowned ACC champions, and the College is very proud of their achievement.

A big thank you to Mr Thompson (coach), Mr McGeoch (assistant coach), students Nic Madaffari and Calista Harvey and all the parents who made the journey to support the team.

Cross Country

This Cross Country was the first whole school event held at the College this year. After cancelling the week before due to bad weather, we were lucky to have perfect conditions for the athletes.

Students ran in their year groups, and races were staggered 15 minutes apart. Other students cheered on from their house bays. During the event, there were four course records broken and some very close finishes.

The event culminated in the mascot relay with our Year 12 students putting on a show, running in their costumes and entertaining all students and staff.

Congratulations to all our Champion and Runners Up boys and girls, all students who participated, the staff and of course, the 2022 winning house: COSTELLO!

Winter Carnival

On Wednesday this week, we took six teams to the Winter Carnival, held in Bunbury. It was great to see so many of our Year 9 students competing in soccer, netball, basketball and volleyball. All the teams had a lot of fun competing against the other schools in the South West, and the students competitive spirit was on display.

Thanks to all the student helpers who assisted in umpiring and coaching, and the staff for all their efforts.

We have a lot of carnivals coming up next term, so keep an eye out for the following events:

· Inter-School Cross Country

· Sun Smart Surf Carnival

· Year 10 ACC AFL

· ACC Basketball (from Term 1)

and of course: Country Week

Have a fantastic break everyone!
