The Year 7s Enjoy the Start of their High School Learning Journey

The newest and biggest cohort to enter Our Lady of Mercy College began their journey at the College on Monday, 31 January 2022.

The first day at a new school can be an uneasy experience at times, but for the most part, the students seemed to really enjoy their day.

The excitement of making new friends, new experiences and opportunities for embracing life was clear to see when the students were asked to reflect on their day. They wrote about their experiences in a little writing exercise within their House groups.

The comments are heartwarming, and we hope that when the Class of 2027 conclude their time at the College, they feel the same about entering a new chapter of their lives.

Mr Alex Smith, Head of Year 7

Below are some of the thoughts of our Year7s after their first day:

“I really enjoyed my first day. Seeing my friends, getting to know the buildings and my homeroom teacher was great. Learning how to use my lock was a little tricky, but I’ll get better at it. I loved how the teachers were so kind to us because they know it’s hard for us to get used to the high school environment.”

“It was really fun. I made new friends, met new teachers and got used to life at the College. I also got used to waking up early and getting on the bus to school. It was cool.”

“A bit chaotic, exciting and adventurous. It was really fun to learn new things. I really liked Home Economics and HASS. Meeting new people in my homeroom was thrilling, and finding where old friends were was quite amazing. I’m going to like it here.”

“My first day was good; I had Media, which was really cool. I had to brainstorm ideas for a stop motion animation. The Maths teacher was also cool; we learnt a bit about statistics. We then had Italian, which was nice to learn some new words, but I think I’ll forget them for our next lesson. There’s lots to remember, but in the long term, I think it will be great.”

“The day was good. I finally managed to lock my locker without putting my lock on backwards! I made a new friend and managed to get to all my classes on time without getting lost. So overall, I think I’m winning after my first day.”

“My first day at Our Lady of Mercy College was great. I made a new friend, and I’m sure there are more to come! It’s so nice to know some people and have friends here from my Primary School. It’s also a big step coming from a small school; the place is so big. I’m a little confused about what buildings my classes are in, but I’m sure that I will figure it out. It was nice to have so many teachers being friendly and helping us find classrooms. I’m also getting better at using my lock.”

“My first day was fun. I was a little bit nervous, but it went well. I thought that I was not going to find my classes and I would get lost and be late, but it all went well. I was a tad late to one class, but my teacher was very nice and got that I was just a little lost. All the teachers are really nice, and everyone seems really friendly. I can’t wait to continue this really fun journey."
